NT Central Intake Service: A vital gateway to homelessness support

NT Central Intake Service: A vital gateway to homelessness support

By Charmayne Fleming, Lutheran Care’s Head of Aboriginal Strategy and Practice

One of the great privileges of my role is having the opportunity to work alongside and support teams across Lutheran Care SA and NT sites that make a genuine difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities. I have had the pleasure of spending time connecting with our Northern Territory Central Intake Service (CIS) team and learning more about the significant work they undertake each day.

The NT CIS is a vital gateway within the Territory’s service system. For many peoples seeking assistance, CIS is their first point of contact. Whether someone requires housing support, homelessness services, referrals, information, or guidance through complex systems, the team plays an essential role in helping people find the right support at the right time.

What continually stands out is the professionalism, dedication, and compassion demonstrated by the CIS team. Their work requires balancing high levels of demand while navigating often complex situations with care, respect, and responsiveness. Every interaction has the potential to influence a person’s experience of seeking help and their ability to access the support they need.

Equally important is the strong network of partnerships that underpins the service. Effective outcomes are not achieved by a single organisation working alone. The CIS team works collaboratively with government agencies, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, housing providers, homelessness services, health services, and community organisations across the Northern Territory. These partnerships strengthen pathways to support and help create a more connected and responsive service system for those seeking assistance.

The Northern Territory is home to diverse communities, cultures, languages, and lived experiences. Supporting people effectively requires local knowledge, strong relationships, cultural understanding, and a commitment to working together. The CIS team and its partners demonstrate these qualities every day through their collaborative approach and shared focus on achieving positive outcomes for the people and communities they serve.

As Head of Aboriginal Strategy and Practice at Lutheran Care, I am particularly encouraged by the team’s commitment to listening, learning, and building relationships that support culturally responsive and safe service delivery. The willingness of staff to engage thoughtfully with the communities they serve contributes to stronger, more inclusive outcomes.

I would like to acknowledge not only the CIS team but also the many partner organisations that contribute to this important work. Together, they provide a critical service that helps people navigate challenges, access support, and connect with opportunities for greater wellbeing and stability.

Thank you to the NT Central Intake Service team and your partners for the work you do every day. It is a privilege to support your efforts, learn from your experiences, and witness the positive impact you continue to have across the Northern Territory. Your commitment, collaboration, and dedication make a meaningful difference in the lives of our peoples.

About the NT Central Intake Service (CIS): Lutheran Care delivers the Territory-wide Central Intake Homelessness Support Service in partnership with Yilli Rreung Housing, Lhere Artepe and the Salvation Army, funded by the Northern Territory Government Department of Children and Families. The service provides a single, culturally safe entry point to homelessness support across the NT, with coordinated assessment and referrals to appropriate housing, health and social services.
