Helping People Start Again

A growing number of South Australians are living one unexpected bill or life event away from homelessness.

Sometimes it’s because rent has increased. Sometimes it’s domestic or family violence. Sometimes it’s illness, unemployment or simply the rising cost of living.

For many people, receiving the keys to a house after homelessness isn’t the end of the journey.

It’s the beginning. Many arrive carrying everything they own in a couple of bags. No bed. No fridge. No dining table for children to do their homework.

For the past three years, Lutheran Care has relied on a dedicated philanthropic fund to help us provide this practical support. This year we were informed that this $40,000 of funding is no longer available.

We Need Your Help

This loss of funding is why Lutheran Care has launched the Path Out of Homelessness Drive, a community initiative built around two simple goals:

While it represented only a small part of what is needed, it enabled frontline staff to respond to individual needs when people were at risk of losing their housing or needed help establishing a new home.

Last financial year alone, this funding helped around 45 households with practical support including rent arrears, bond assistance, beds, furniture, whitegoods, urgent property repairs and rubbish removal; support that helped people establish or maintain being housed and avoid homelessness.

Have a Night Out to Support Those In Need

We have partnered with State Opera South Australia (SOSA) to give supporters and the community the opportunity to experience the magic of a world class opera while also helping South Australians experiencing homelessness.

With State Opera South Australia’s enchanting season of Hansel & Gretel scheduled to run for four thrilling theatrical nights in August, both SOSA and Lutheran Care are pleased to announce that $10 from every ticket sold through this dedicated Lutheran Care online booking link will be directed to the Path Out of Homelessness Drive.

$250 – Home starter pack (towels, a kettle, toaster, plates and cutlery)
$500 – Fridge, freezer or other white goods
$750 – Beds and bedroom furniture
$1,000 – Furnish a family's home (beds, a lounge and a kitchen dining suite)
$5,000 – Full essential package for a family home (essential items needed to settle in and start fresh)
