This live art installation by artist Andrew Baines and Lutheran Care in the heart of Rundle Mall for National Volunteer Week 2026 celebrates our volunteers as the real-life superheroes they are!
We need more heroes. Are you hero material?
Is 2026 your year to suit up and step into action? Every community needs its superheroes; consider volunteering this year and putting your powers to work where they’re needed most.
Volunteers are the humble heroes who strengthen communities and amplify the good in the world. This National Volunteer Week event celebrates them and invites others to step forward and join in.

About the Artist
Andrew Baines is a Henley Beach-based surrealist artist known for his bold paintings featuring bolar-hatted figures, cows, sausage dogs and lighthouses.
He has also gained considerable international recognition for his surreal installations, which place politicians, orchestras, live cows or hundreds of suited volunteers in the sea and on beaches for photo shoots. Previous collaborators include former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, former federal politicians Alexander Downer and Amanda Vanstone, and former South Australian Premiers Lynn Arnold and Steven Marshall. He previously partnered with Lutheran Care for the installation, ‘Behind the Guise of Homelessness‘.
Andrew is a United Nations Art Advisor and his paintings hang as part of collections at ANZ Bank, Singapore; The Australian Embassy in Rome, Italy; Government House SA; and the United Nations Association of Australia.

We have more than 300 volunteers in various roles across our organisation who make meaningful contributions to the lives of vulnerable South Australians every day.
From assisting customers or helping behind the scenes in our op shops, to connecting families in crisis with our Emergency Relief program, visiting an elderly person for just an hour a fortnight through the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme, or bringing a smile to the faces of children and parents at our Family Zone hub, there are different roles available to suit your skills and interests.
Crisis Relief and Early Intervention Programs

Your donation will help us support vulnerable families and individuals in South Australia and the Northern Territory.
- $25 - will help stock up Lutheran Care’s Emergency Relief pantry.
- $60 - will fund 2 clients to take part in our financial wellbeing programs, run by trained financial professionals.
- $75 - can provide groceries to feed a family in crisis for a week.
- $150 - can help us deliver parenting education workshops and support groups, one-on-one financial and personal counselling, crèche services and playgroups at Family Zone.
- $250 - can help us provide additional support to people experiencing complex issues such as homelessness, domestic or family violence, mental health concerns and more.
