What is it really like to be part of a Defence family in Greater Darwin? 

Whether Defence life has been a positive experience, a challenging one, or a mixture of both, we want to hear from you. 

Lutheran Care is developing a Defence Family Support Program for the Greater Darwin community. Your experience can help us understand what is working, what is difficult, what support already exists, and where something more or different may be needed. 

You do not need to have had a negative experience to take part. We are interested in your strengths, experiences, ideas and priorities. 

Who can take part?

This questionnaire is for people aged 18 years or older who:

  • are currently serving in the Australian Defence Force or another country’s military and are based in Greater Darwin; or 
  • are an adult family member of someone who is serving and based in Greater Darwin.

Family can mean different things to different people. For this questionnaire, family may include partners, former partners, parents, adult children, other relatives, kin, carers and people you consider to be family or part of your support network.

Family members do not need to live in Greater Darwin to participate . Participants must currently live in the Northern Territory. 

Your experience, your choice

Taking part is completely voluntary.

You can skip any question, choose not to answer, or stop at any time. Please share only what you feel comfortable sharing. You can review and change your answers before you finish.

Your voice and your culture matter

Defence families in Greater Darwin come from different cultures, backgrounds, communities and family structures.

We recognise that people may understand family, community, support and wellbeing in different ways.

We wlcome these different perspectives. There is no single “right” Defence family experience.

If there are cultural, community or family considerations that shape your experience of Defence life or the support you need, you are welcome to tell us about them in your own words.

Lutheran Care will use the information you choose to share to understand local needs and help inform the development of family support.

Please protect your privacy and the privacy of others. Do not include:

  • names or contact details of other individuals;
  • street addresses;
  • Defence service numbers;
  • information that could identify another person; 
  • classified or operationally sensitive information.

When describing a family or personal experience, please share only what you are comfortable sharing and avoid identifying other people.
