The powerful impact of Community Hubs in South Australia has been highlighted in a recent Channel 9 News Adelaide feature, showcasing how the program is helping families build connection, confidence and community.
The news segment which aired on Saturday, 9 May, shared the story of the Community Hub at Karrendi Primary School, where Hub Leader Aleesha and community members Satuti and Farah spoke about the difference the Hub has made in their lives after moving to Australia. The story highlighted how Community Hubs support families through English language learning, early childhood development, social connection and pathways to volunteering and employment.
The report also recognised the role volunteers and Hub staff play in creating welcoming and inclusive spaces for families, with activities including playgroups, cooking classes, translation support and community gatherings.
Community Hubs are safe and welcoming spaces based in local schools where families can make friends, learn new skills, connect with services and support their children’s learning and development.
Lutheran Care is proud to support 10 Community Hubs across Adelaide’s northern suburbs in partnership with Community Hubs Australia.
The Hubs are located in schools across the Cities of Playford, Salisbury and Port Adelaide Enfield, and offer activities and support including:
- Parenting classes
- Playgroups
- Breakfast clubs
- Adult English classes
- Early learning and development support
- Art and craft groups
- Vocational pathway training
- Referrals to local services
- Support programs for mums and families.
While Community Hubs are open to everyone, many programs are specifically designed to support migrant and refugee families, particularly mothers with young children.
Last year, more than 1,100 families engaged with the 10 Community Hubs in South Australia, with the Channel 9 report noting the program could continue to grow in the future due to its positive impact in local communities.
