Communication creates possibility was the theme for Speech Pathology Week 2026, held from 23–29 August – a theme that reflects what the Elcies Speech Pathology team sees every day in their work with clients across Adelaide.

When communication and swallowing needs are supported, people can have greater opportunities to connect, learn, make choices, participate and thrive. For speech pathologists, this means helping turn possibility into opportunity – supporting people to participate more fully and confidently in their families, schools, workplaces and communities.

To celebrate Speech Pathology Week, we shared this video featuring Elcies Clinical Lead Speech Pathology, Julianne, who spoke about what makes the Elcies team so special.

A diverse and caring team

Julianne says one of the team’s greatest strengths is its diversity.

“Our team is a really interesting team because we’ve got very young therapists to more mature therapists,” she explains. “We come with different experiences and we come at different stages of our life.”

The team also brings a wealth of language and cultural knowledge. Elcies has speech pathologists who speak Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin and Italian, among other languages.

“We’re very, very lucky to have that, and with that comes their cultural knowledge as well,” Julianne says. “So we’re a really good, diverse team.”

That diversity is complemented by something equally important: a shared commitment to caring for the people they work with.

“We are a caring profession, and we feel like we can say we’re really caring people. We’re kind and compassionate.”

The team’s approach is also guided by Lutheran Care’s values of compassion, social justice, inclusion and courage.

“That informs our decision making around everything that we do and helps lead us and guide us when we’re working on a daily basis,” Julianne says.

Why our speechies love what they do

We also asked the Elcies Speech Pathology team what they love most about their work – and their answers came back to one thing: possibility.

Our speech pathologists told us they love:

• Seeing clients participate in things they once found difficult.
• Watching a client’s confidence grow when they realise, “I can do this.”
• Seeing clients feel valued, included and like they truly belong.
• Knowing that the skills developed in therapy can help someone participate more fully in everyday life.
• Celebrating the little wins – from a first independent response or successful interaction to the first time a client advocates for themselves.
• Seeing clients become more confident communicators and feel that they truly belong in their families, schools, workplaces and communities.

As one team member put it, “communication can open doors to connection, participation, independence and belonging.”

Helping people live their possibilities

Speech pathology can support people with a wide range of communication and swallowing needs, including concerns such as stuttering and cluttering.

At Elcies, our Speech Pathology team works alongside clients to understand their individual goals and support them to communicate and participate in ways that are meaningful to them.

This Speech Pathology Week, we celebrated our fantastic speechies and the difference they make every day – helping people across South Australia build confidence, find connection and live their possibilities.
