Inspired by sharing traditional language and culture with her nieces and nephews, children’s author Mia Speed recently completed an internship with Lutheran Care creating resources for Foster Care families caring for Aboriginal children.

During the summer internship, Mia created flashcards, storyboards, activity books, information sheets and cultural training resources to further equip Foster Care families with resources and knowledge to connect Aboriginal children in their care to culture.

Mia is a proud Wirangu woman who grew up in Port Lincoln and whose ancestral lands are near Ceduna.

Mia, 19, moved to Adelaide in early 2024 to pursue university studies before publishing her Wirangu language children’s book ‘Where’s My Minya Marlu‘ in October 2024. The book promotes cultural pride and language use among children.

Surrounded by family and friends, Mia hosted a launch event for her book at her former primary school in Port Lincoln.

“It was really nice to be able to connect with my teachers again,” Mia said.

“A lot of family came along, including all my nieces and nephews who were the sole inspiration of why I wanted to create the book in the first place.

“They didn’t have any resources to turn to growing up and if I have the chance to be able to change for that for them, I think that’s a great thing.”

Since joining the Lutheran Care Foster Care Cultural Team, Mia has enjoyed gaining an insight into child protection and supporting Foster Care families by being in community and actively participating in events.

“I’ve always been interested in the care of Aboriginal children,” Mia said.

“Seeing that Lutheran Care work really closely making sure Foster Carers are equipped to take care of Aboriginal kids, I think that’s really interesting.”

Mia accessed the internship through Lutheran Care’s partnership with CareerTrackers.

CareerTrackers creates pathways and support systems for First Nations young adults to attend and graduate from university, with high marks, industry experience and bright professional futures.

Outside of work and study, Mia is a keen netballer, currently training with the Netball SA Premier League, and has also previously played Australian Rules Football with Port Lincoln’s Mallee Park women’s team.

Earlier this year, Mia was named in The Advertiser’s People to Watch: 25 South Aussies on the rise in 2025.

Mia has enriched the Lutheran Care Foster Care program with her unique perspective and contributions, bringing a wealth of experience and a vibrant cultural background.
